A few months ago I wrote a piece on the five top must haves when generating an online business. The piece described the kind of software you would need to get a website built, create the graphics for it and generally start an online venture with only the cost of Domain and Hosting which at last check is approx 98 quid for 2 years.
I talked about a piece of software called Gimp and think that I was talking out of complete ignorance when rating it. I think I gave it 7 out 10, but to be quite honest, it is without doubt a massive, massive 10! So much so, that other than Layer Styles on Photoshop, I use this software for all my current graphics work. Its amazing.
I apologise for the bipolar opinions of a Designer, but I will certainly not change my mind this time.
Why though? Why is this so good?
1. Its interface is appealing and clear
2. Its tools are so vast its unreal
3. The export formats are vast too
4. There is absolutely loads of tools on the web designed for it to develop your work just like Photoshop. Brushes, Vector Shapes it's all there.
5. If you have been a user of Photoshop, you will pick it up no problem.
6. It's FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! SCOTT FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Open source is awesome, but I've never really got into it. Call me a snob, but I still prefer PhotoShop.
What do you use for vector graphics? Is there a vector equivalent of Illustrator & InDesign?
There are a few out there, but the best one that I use all the time for logo design is inkscape.org. It's easy to use, has all the tools that you need and the final product always looks great. The new logog that has been done today is a combination of GIMP and Inkscape!
